Abstract
295,070. Andrew, F. C. May 12, 1927. Disinfecting and deodorizing air.- In a portable machine for the cleaning, fumigating, deodorizing, and like treatment of air, of the kind having a vertical casing 1 in which is arranged a fan or fans 12 for constantly circulating the air in the room or chamber, and a container 8 for peat or for a block of porous clay or other absorbent material saturated with germicide &c., the air being drawn in at the bottom of the casing and forced out at the top cleansed, dried and charged with vapour of the germicide &c., the fan or fans 12 are driven by a motor or motors 13 disposed outside the casing 1 on bracket 3 secured to the exterior of the casing. A layer 15 of cork or of rubber or other resilient or soft material may be disposed between each motor and bracket. In the construction described, the casing 1, which is suspended within the room, is built of annular sections, between which rings 2 of cork &c. may be placed, and formed with or connected thereto are the annular motor-supporting brackets 3. The brackets 3 have supporting bars 4 the upper ends of which are secured to a flange 5 on the casing and are provided with holes for suspension chains &c., the lower ends constituting feet for the machine. The container 8 is carried by a removable tray 7 with a perforated bottom and carrying charcoal or other air filtering or purifying material between metal gauze rings 9, 10. A conical tube 11 is disposed above tray 7. A removable filter is secured to the bottom of the casing 1 and consists of a container 27 in which, between metal gauze discs 30, is aluminium or other bright metal shavings &c. 29, forming a coarse filter. A finer filter screen 28 of canvas &c. is disposed above the coarse filter. The fans 12 are each driven from an electric motor 13 secured to a support 14, attached to the bracket 3, by a steel strap 13a which has a screw 16 at its free end passing through a lug 17 on the support 14 and engaged by a nut 13<b>. Each fan 12 is attached to a boss 18 which is feathered on a shaft 19 rotatably mounted in a bearing carried by a spider 22 fixed in the casing 1. A hard fibre, &c. disc 23 is attached to boss 18 and is pressed by a spring 26 into engagement with a wheel 24 having a soft rubber periphery and mounted on the shaft 25 of the motor 13, giving a friction drive. The portion of wheel 24 along shaft 25 can be adjusted to vary the speed of the drive, or the wheel may be fixed to the shaft 25 and the position of the motor variable. The fans may be driven at any relative speed. Gearing mav replace the friction drive. One motor may be employed to drive both fans. Resistances may be combined with the motors to prevent overload. means for cooling the treated air may be provided on the casing, e.g. the cone 11 may have a hollow wall through which cooling water is circulated. The cooling effect may also be obtained by evaporation of liquids absorbed in porous clay &c. or by compression and expansion of air, ammonia or other suitable gases, the power required being, if desired, obtained from the motors 13 or from an additional motor. The casing may be of ornamental form, e.g. horns of hammered iron for carrying flowers or ferns may be fixed thereto. Alternatively a silk &c. shade 6 may be attached to the casing and electric lamps may be placed between them. The lamps may be of different colours and arranged to give colour changes by a. commutator or multiple switch driven from one of the motors 13. The casing 1 may be of material such as ebonite or fibre to reduce resonance. Specification 246,261 is referred to.
