293,946. Sugar Beet & Crop Driers, Ltd., Melrose, W. K., and Stead, J. C. May 24, 1927. Extracting sugar. - Dried beets in sliced or disintegrated form are subjected to diffusion at a temperature between 50‹-70‹ C. in warm water, the raw syrup while at the same temperature being limed and then clarified by centrifugal or other mechanical action. Prior to a final filtration, the clarified syrup is preferably mixed with melted low-grade sugar and decolorized with activated carbon. A second strike of white sugar is obtained and the low-grade product for mixing is produced by boiling the green syrup remaining.
