293,029. International Combustion Engineering Corporation, (Assignees of Wood, W. R). June 30, 1927, [Convention date]. Water-tube boilers. - A steam generator comprises two vertically spaced water tube boiler units, the upper including a steam and water space and being subjected to heat connection and the lower, a furnace-shaped unit subjected to radiant heat, a superheater being located between the units and means being provided for introducing fuel into the lower part of the second unit and withdrawing combustion products above the first. The upper horizontal boiler unit A comprises tube banks 7, 8 connected to vertical headers, and a cross drum 13. The lower unit comprises a boiler furnace C consisting of a top tube wall 16 with four rows of tubes, a single bottom wall 28, and side walls 19, 21, 24, connection with the drum 13 being by a downcomer 27 which leads to a drum 20 and headers 25, and by upcomers 28 connecting headers 26 directly with the drum 13 and upcomers 29 leading to the drum through drum 30 and tubes 31. The superheater D extends for the full horizontal breadth and depth of the installation and is suspended from the boiler A by straps. Finely subdivided fuel such as powdered coal is introduced tangentially through nozzles 35 at the corners of the furnace and air is admitted through surrounding ducts 39 from air heaters 36 connected with the outlet ducts by a passage on each of two opposite sides of the setting.
