Alternating - curr e n t induction machines. - For phase compensation in an asynchronous motor, the machine is cascaded with a separately driven exciter of a non-selfexciting series generator type having its brushes set behind the neutral axis by an angle of less than 180 electrical degrees and driven by an auxiliary motor of such a type that its speed falls considerably with increasing load. In the form shown, the main motor A is cascaded through its slip-rings with the series wound commutator exciter E, which is driven by an asynchronous motor M having a rotor resistance R. The exciter brushes, as shown in Fig. 2, have a negative lead. The exciter is thereby given a resistant torque which is a function of and increases with the load of the main motor. The speed of the auxiliary motor and exciter accordingly varies inversely as the load on the main motor and the compensation is maintained constant within wide limits of the load variation.
