Feeding-devices for endless-chain scraper and trough conveyers; breaking, cuutting, and loosening devices; driving-gear; directing and adjustably supporting; collapsable and like framework. - A portable loading machine, Fig. 3, comprises gathering mechanism mounted on the body and driven by power in either direction, the gathering teeth moving in closed orbital paths. The machine is of the general type described in Specification 283,506 comprising main and tail conveyers 9, 10 mounted on an endlesstread vehicle, the main conveyer having a shovel end 5, 6 pivoted at 3, and the gathering device being carried by arms 63 pivoted on the frame at 54. The gathering device comprises a rotary shaft 7 carrying double teeth 74, Fig. 7. For moving broken coal on to the conveyer the arms 63 are raised and the shaft 7 is rotated counterclockwise, the arms 63 being lowered under the control of a clutch. For moving standing coal which has not been completely broken down by the blasting, the arms 63 are lowered to the position shown in full lines, the shaft 7 is driven clockwise, and the machine is moved forward towards the face at slow speed. The toothed shaft 7 digs beneath the coal, disintegrates it, and moves it in large lumps on to the conveyer. Teeth 76 on sprocket chains driving the shaft 7 cut vertical side kerfs to admit the arms 63. The conveyer 9, the gathering device 7 and the mechanism for raising the arms 63, are driven from the shaft 12 of the propelling motor 11, Fig. 3, and the bevel wheel 15. The wheel 15 drives a hollow countershaft 36, Fig. 4, through a clutch 19 and spur-gearing. The shaft 36 carries sprockets 39 for driving the conveyer 9 at an intermediate point of its length. A shaft 54 extending through the hollow shaft 36 carries sprocket wheels 61 for driving the gathering mechanism, and is rotated in one or other direction from the shaft 36 by reversing- gear comprising oppositely - rotating spur wheel 40, 49, either of which may be engaged by a clutch member 55 sliding on the shaft. The gathering device 7 is driven from the sprockets 61 by chain-and-sprocket gear 64, 67, 69, Fig. 6, enclosed within the hollow arms 63. The arms 63 are raised and lowered by pinions 101, Fig. 3, engaging toothed sectors 102 on the arms. These pinions are driven by chain-andsprocket gearing 97, 96, Fig. 4, from the bevel wheel 15 through a clutch 82 and spur-gearing 92, 94. The shovel end of the conveyer 9 may be supported from the arms 63 by hooks 109 for raising it whilst the machine is moved about. The motor 11 drives the endless-treads through transmission mechanism as described in Specification 283,506, which provides two speeds forward and one in reverse, and permits driving of either tread alone for turning the machine.
