Abstract
292,060. Nielsen, H., and Laing, B. Dec. 4, 1926. Divided on 276,407. Coking and carbonizing processes.-A process of distilling carbonaceous materials of a coking character consists in subjecting them to the action of hot gases containing a controlled percentage of oxygen (2 to 8 per cent) or an oxidizing constituent, so as to oxidize some of their coking constituents and influence their coking power, and, after carbonization gasifying the solid residue in the presence of steam. The carbonizing step of the process is carried out at temperatures not above 600‹ C. but may be followed by a high temperature treatment up to 1200‹ C. to reduce the volatile content to from 1 to 4 per cent. The carbonization may be carried out so that for any given size of material or thickness of fuel bed the period of distillation is so controlled that a temperature difference exceeding 100 to 150‹ C. is not allowed to exist between the temperatures at the centre and periphery of the material. The volume of gas for distillation purposes may be of such volume that the vapour tension of the oil fractions present is lowered sufficiently to enable such oils to be liberated in vapour form at temperatures not exceeding 500‹ C., and the gas carrying the oil vapours may be cooled to 100‹ C. without the oils condensing. A free burning residue is obtained which is not coated with graphitic carbon and which is easily oxidized by the oxygen present in ores such as copper or iron oxides or by steam in a water gas producer. The stripped gas from the process may be employed as the heating medium. Specifications 162,459, 192,515, 207,623, 212,961, 223,302, 227,880, 243,857, 287,037 and 287,381 are referred to.
