Abstract

291,860. Childe, L. B., Kershaw, A. G., and Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. March 8, 1927. Operating and controlling doors and gates hydraulically and pneumatically and by treadles and the like.-For mining and like purposes where two or more doors or gates are arranged in succession across the track, as for the air-locks in collieries, the action of the manually-operated control valve at the point of control is arranged to be superseded automatically as regards effecting the closure of each door or gate 'remote from the point of control until the traffic conditions at this door or gate are such as to permit its closure. An arrangement is described in which the closure of the door or gate remote from the point of control is controlled by an axle counter adjacent this door. The control valve 5 is arranged to admit pressure fluid from the pipe 18 through the pipes 16, 17 to the cylinders 3, 4 to open the doors 1, 2 respectively, the midposition of the handle 15 putting the pipes 16, 17 to exhaust when either of the doors is in the open position. When it is desired to admit a number of trucks into the air-lock the door 1 is opened by moving the handle 15 to the left, pressure fluid from the pipe 18 passing through the valve 9 and pipe 19. The door 1 in opening reverses the valve 7 and places the cylinder 4 of the door 2 to exhaust through the pipe 24. After the door 1 has been closed bv the return of the handle 15 to the mid-position, the door 2 is opened by moving the handle 15 to the right, the pressure fluid admitted through the pipe 17 reversing the position of the check valve 21. The trucks that pass through the open door 2 engage the axle counter 10 and reverse the valve 11 to establish communication between the pipes 14 and 12 for for the supply of pressure fluid through the valve 7 to the cylinder 4. The door 2 is thus maintained in the open position until the predetermined number of trucks have passed over the axle counter 10 and are clear of the door. The valve 11 is then restored to the position shown with the pipe 12 put to exhaust 13, and movement of the control handle 15 to exhaust then serves to release the pressure fluid from the cylinder 4 by way of pipes 23, 22 and 17.
