Abstract

291,517. Ricardo, H. R. March 3, 1927. Addition to 234,183. Valves, arrangement of.-An annular delivery port A<6> or ring of delivery ports in the cylinder wall controlled by the sleeve valve is furnished with a lower sealing ring D carried by the cylinder to form the lower edge of the ports and engaging the exterior of the sleeve, and an upper sealing ring either similarly carried and constituting the upper edge, or carried by the cylinder head as at A<2> and engaging the interior of the sleeve. The sealing rings may be constructed as described in Specification 276,434, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for]. A sealing ring L is disposed below the inlet ports A<5>. The sleeve valve, A<3> is operated from the lower stage valve B<3> by a lever K engaging the valve B<3> at one end and pivotally connected to a tubular member K<4> depending rotatably from the base F; an intermediate point K<5> is linked to a stud K' rigidly mounted on the sleeve valve A<3>. The sleeve valve B<3> may be operated by a pinion mounted in the crank case carrying an eccentric pin engaging the sleeve and driven from the crank shaft. Fig. 4 shows the sealing rings formed each as a double ring V, V<1>, the upper and lower pairs being separated by a ported distance ring W. Fig. 3 shows the rings as a pair of engaging L's containing a ported ring and tending to be separated by the pressure of air between them. The L's may be replaced by single U-rings.
