Lead and tin alkyl compounds.-Alkyl compounds of metals of the second sub-group of the fourth group of the periodic table are produced by alloying the metal with an alkali metal, treating the subdivided alloy in a closed reaction vessel with an alkylating agent dissolved in a liquid hydrocarbon and separating the resulting metal alky compounds, for example by extraction with a solvent, or by steam distillation after removal of the hydrocarbon solvent if the latter be easily volatile. The vessel, which may be equipped with heating and cooling jackets or coils and a stirring device or grinding and agitating balls need only be warmed at the commencement of the reaction. In an example a sodium-lead alloy and naphtha are introduced into a reaction vessel and ethyl chloride is gradually added. Lead tetraethyl is produced and is separated. Other petroleum distillates such as white oil and kerosene and benzenoid hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene and the xylenes are stated to be suitable solvents. The process, which is particularly suitable for producing tin alkyl compounds as well as those of lead, may be facilitated by using catalysts as described in Specification 214.221. Ethyl bromide is mentioned as another alkylating agent.
