Abstract

Rudders. - Surfaces of variable curvature for controlling aircraft are formed of units hinged to one another and so linked that upon moving that one of them which is pivoted on an axis carried by the aircraft the others are progressively tilted to give the desired camber to the surface as a whole. Fig. 6 shows a. supporting plane for aircraft comprising a fixed portion b and two series - of elements a, conforming to the general contour of the plane, hinged to one another and to the fixed portion at c, c<1>, c<2>. The parts are. connected together by the linkage shown so that by moving an arm d on the innermost rear section by a cable r the camber of the plane is varied as a whole, and by moving the rear leaves g on opposite sides of the machine by independent controls t the two rearmost sections of the plane may be adjusted independently of the other sections to act as ailerons. The front and rear sections may be made independently adjustable by employing fixed brackets instead of the pivoted levers g and by providing an arm d on the innermost of both the forward and rear sections. A fixed plane having ailerons in two sections similar to the rearmost sections of Fig. 6 also is described. Figs. 4 and 5 show two other methods of connecting together the sections. In the form shown in Fig. 4, arms i from one section and the next section but one extend across an intermediate section and are connected by a pin and slot. Where it is desired that one section should move in the opposite direction to another in the form shown in Fig. 6 the corresponding arm h is placed on the other side of the section, and in the form shown in Fig. 5 the cables are not crossed. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect 91 (3) (a) the invention may be applied to watercraft. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
