Abstract
289,159. Hammond, C. F., and Shackleton, W. Jan. 22, 1927. Silk evaporators.-An apparatus for the concentration or dehydration of liquids such as ammonium chloride solution comprises one or more stoneware pots b, c each fitted with a cover w supporting a submerged flame burner z and containing an air lift tube or circulator t. The supply of liquid to be concentrated is controlled by a float chamber a and the duration of treatment is regulated by a delivery valve 12. The pots b, c and their covers w are secured to annular castings h on the main frame by means allowing their independent removal. The securing means for the pots b, c consist of shouldered rings f provided with seating pads m and attached to the castings h by bolts g fitted with springs j, nuts k and distance sleeves l. The securing means for the covers w consist of rings 2 having external lugs attached to the castings k by nuts 5 and hinged bolts 6. The top edges of the pots are grooved to receive rubber seating rings x and the rings 2 are shaped to receive rubber packings 4. The tubes t are provided with flanges t<1> formed with rings s which are supported by spacing rings r resting on shoulders q on the pots b, c. Annular deflectors v<1> are supported above the tube t by spacer rings u. In operation, the liquid to be concentrated flows through the chamber a and fills the pots b, c to the level of their inlets and outlets d, d<1>. On the burners being ignited the combustion products carry the liquid up the tubes t so that it overflows at the top and descends through ducts and channels in the rings s, r to the annular spaces between the tubes t and pots b, c. The combustion products and vapours pass through ports in the deflectors v<1> to exhaust elbows 1, while the head of the Liquid causes the liquid so heated and concentrated to pass up a vertical duct p to the next pot or delivery valve 12. One or more of the pots may be fitted with an inner pot 16 to separate the incoming liquid from the outgoing liquid. Small cranes may be fitted on the framing to facilitate the removal of the covers wand burners 2.
