Abstract
288,612. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. June 21, 1926, [Convention date]. Cleansing-compositions; splitting fats &c.-Non- aromatic carboxylic acids, sulphonated in the manner described below, are used as cleansing and wetting agents and as catalytic fat saponifiers. Non-aromatic carboxylic acids containing more than eight carbon atoms in the molecule are sulphonated at a temperature above 35‹ C. by means of a strong sulphonating agent such as sulphuric anhydride, fuming sulphuric acid and chlorsulphonic acid. The reaction may be performed in the presence of diluents such as carbontetrachloride which are not sulphonated under the conditions of working, and in the presence of catalysts. In examples (1) stearic or oleic acid is treated with chlorsulphonic acid, the temperature being raised finally to 100‹ C., and when the reaction is complete the product is poured into water and the impurities filtered off. The alkali salts of the product may be obtained directly or by way of the calcium salt; (2) molten palmitic acid is treated with sulphuric anhydride. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the sulphonation of hydroaromatic carboxylic acids. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
