Abstract

Photo-mechanical printing-surfaces.-To make screens such as are used in making printing-surfaces, in which any predetermined rate of change of density in each of the small areas thereof can be obtained, e.g. from transparency c, Fig. 1. to opacity d, a sensitive plate of film associated in half-tone relationship with a ruled or half-tone snreen of 1 : 1 ratio is exposed through a fixed aperture r, Fig. 6, which is geometrically similar to the areas to be produced on the screen, and through a rotating diaphragm p<1>, Figs. 2 and 6, having an opaque area v of such shape, e.g. having circumferential lengths of different radii, as will give the rate of change of density required in the multiple image areas of the aperture r produced on the developed sensitive plate. For a screen to leave black centres, the rotating diaphragm will be opaque with a shaped opening. The screens may be made on very thin celluloid, and may be used between a continuous tone negative and a sensitized plate in printing the plate to obtain a printing-surface.
