Abstract

Rolling.-The rolls a of a rolling mill are supported over their whole length by one or two steel cylinders i fitted with roller bearings g on the fixed shaft d, the cylinders being formed with shoulders m and the shaft having rings n to hold the roller bearing units spaced in position and to provide hollow spaces k for lubricant. The roller bearing units are prevented from moving outwards at one end by a shoulder o on the axle d and at the other end by ball bearings p. Packin-rings, q, r close up the ends of the cylinder. These supporting cylinders i act as bearings for the working rolls a which on removal of guide rails may be drawn away laterally, leaving the opposite supporting parts still in the opposite frame, no extension of bearings being involved. Fig. 12 shows in detail a bearing for a working roll with a central annular space u for lubricant or cooling and side spaces v for lubricant and containing 2 or 3 metal rings at an angle of 49‹ and on the outer side thick washers of rubber canvas with an outer steel disc x on which screwthreaded pins y may act.
