Abstract
285,501. Espagnent, M. Feb. 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Cases; cells; separators; supports for electrodes.-In a portable storage battery in which the plates are separated by vertical ribs 3 within the cell, the ribs are cut away to receive strips 6 of insulating material bearing against the upper edges of the plates 4 to prevent vertical displacement and the plates are drawn upwards against the strips by means bearing on the upper surface of the cell cover to hold it in place. The construction allows ready removal of the plates when required. The plates of each polarity are connected as by welding to corresponding collecting bars b, b<1>, and the strips 6 are held against accidental dislodgment by insulating material such as rubber tubes 7 placed between the upper edges of the plates and the edge of bar b, say at the ends of each strip. As shown, the bar b has a tubular member 9 passing through the cover C and receiving a lead-antimony nut 12 holding the cover in place and connected by connector 13 with a terminal 14 on the cover. Bar b<1> has a rod 9<1> passing through and insulated from the member 9, the upper end having a terminal 16 one member of which is screwed down against an insulating washer 17 bearing on member 9. The cover has a peripheral groove with rubber ring 19 and fits a tapered seating. In modifications, members 9, 9<1> are separated and symmetrically disposed towards the ends of the cell, each having a terminal such as 16, in one such modification the terminals being relied on to hold the cover in place, and in the other the cover being secured by a nut on a centrally placed rod the lower end of which engages an insulating rod passed transversely through aligned perforated lugs formed on the plates.
