Abstract

285,390. Thiele, M. Feb. 14, 1927, [Convention date]. Exhaust, diluting and silencing; pumps. - The engine exhaust escapes through the perforated end of a pipe 1 into a silencer 3 whence it passes to a chamber 8 where it is mixed with air forced through a number of tubes 4 by the motion of the vehicle. The passage of the exhaust into the chamber 8 takes place through a number of apertures 10, Fig. 4, surrounding each of the tubes 4 in a tube plate 6. The inlet ends of the tubes 9 are protected by a strainer 9. The mixture of exhaust gases and air is drawn through the pipes 16, 18 and discharged through the pipe 26 by an engine driven fan 19, Fig. 5. The gases enter at the centre of the fan and, on being discharged are mixed with additional air supplied by auxiliary fans 20, 21 which draw through strainers 23, 24. A flap valve 11, Fig. 1, actuated through Bowden wire 14 and arm 13, permits of the fan being cut out and the mixed gases being discharged direct to atmosphere.
