284,488. Tasman, G. March 8, 1927. Bodies.-Relates to joints between wooden rails and pillars, used in the construction of automobile bodies, &c. According to the invention, a wooden key 13, the grain of which runs in the same direction as that of the pillar 16, is glued into a groove in the end of the rail 11, a transverse aperture 15 is formed through the rail, and holes 14, 17, of the same diameter, are bored through the pillar and rail, the hole 14 passing from the centre of the end face of the rail into the aperture 15. The end of the rail and the key 13 are then glued to the pillar, with the holes 14, 17 in alignment, a lining tube 18 is inserted through these holes, and a bolt 19 is passed through the tube, a nut being screwed on the end of the bolt in the aperture 15. Grooved dowel pins 21 are finally glued in holes bored obliquely through the rail 11, key 13, and pillar 16. The end of the key may be recessed into the pillar. Two rails 29, 30 may be joined to one pillar 31, Fig. 4, in the manner described above, but with a single connecting-bolt 19. Instead of one key, several keys may be provided in grooves in the end of a rail. Where the rails and pillars are very narrow, so that the aperture 15 cannot be made large enough to allow a wrench to enter for tightening the nut, the outer end of the bolt is so formed that the bolt may be turned by a screwdriver or wrench.
