Abstract

284,385. Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd., (Union Switch & Signal Co.). Oct. 25, 1926. Thermionic relays.-Fig. 9 shows a train-carried apparatus used in an automatic railway signal and traincontrol system employing alternating current in the track rails 1, 1<a> Inductively affected coils 27, 28 are connected in series to the primary 196 of an auto-transformer and tuned to control current frequency by condenser 195. The secondary of the transformer is tuned to the same frequency by condenser 197 and the voltage variations are amplified by two electron-tube amplifiers 198, 199. The filaments are supplied in series from a battery 203 over control resistances 201, 202 and a ballast lamp 200. The secondary of the transformer is connected between grid and filament of amplifier 198 through resistance 202 and a high resistance 204, the function of the latter being to prevent the grid from becoming positive with respect to the filament during a portion of each cycle when the voltage across condenser 197 is greater than that across resistance 202. The plates of the amplifier are supplied from the high-potential winding 205 of a dynamotor, the low-potential field winding 206<a> and armature 206 of which are supplied from battery 203. The positive terminal of winding 205 is connected to the plates through reactor coils 207, 208. The plate of tube 198 is connected through an adjustable resistance 210 with the negative pole of the filament supply and a portion of this resistance is included in the grid circuit of tube 199. The plate circuit of tube 199 includes a condenser 212 and the primary 211 of a transformer bridged by a condenser 213. The secondary 214 of the transformer has two windings connected as shown through rectifiers 215, 216 to deliver both halves of the current wave unidirectionally to a relay D. Relay D controls the supply of current from battery 203 to slow-release relays E', E<2> which in turn selectively control the lighting of one or other of three lamps 50 - - 61 according to traffic conditions.
