Abstract
283,866. Posternak, S., and Posternak, T. Jan. 17, 1927, [Convention date]. Albuminoids.-The phosphorus-containing body a obtained from egg-yolk by the process described in Specification 268,806 is treated with an iron salt in calculated proportion whereby a product containing iron (not combined as a salt) is obtained which is almost indistinguishable from the phosphorus-containing body # described in the said Specification. The product thus obtained, and the body # contain two free phosphoric acid radicals and can therefore form normal and acid salts with iron or alkali or alkaline earth metals. The normal iron salts are produced bv reacting upon the product obtained from the body a as above described, or its mixture with the body #, with an excess of an iron salt in neutral solution, while the acid iron salt is obtained in the same manner but in strongly acid solution. Instead of the isolated bodies a or # there may be employed as starting material the crude product of pepsin and trypsin digestion of egg-yolk as described in Specification 268,805 to obtain a product containing iron " organically combined," (i.e., otherwise than as salt) or to obtain the normal or acid iron salts or the iron-alkali or ironalkaline earth salts of such body; and the body containing iron " organically combined " may be made by adding the necessary proportion of an iron salt to the egg-yolk and then subjecting it to the pepsin and trypsin digestions. In an example egg-yolk is digested as described above in presence of ferric chloride to obtain a mixture of the # and modified a bodies containing " organically combined " iron; it may be converted into alkali salts by dissolving in dilute sodium carbonate solution and precipitating with alcohol. In other examples egg-yolk digested as described in Example 1 of Specification 268,805 is treated with two proportions of ferric chloride to obtain iron salts containing 14.5 and 18 per cent of iron respectively. In other examples the phosphorus containing body a or a mixture of the bodies a and # are dissolved in weak sodium carbonate solution or very weak ammonia and treated under specified conditions with different proportions of ferric chloride to obtain iron compounds containing 5 per cent of " organically combined " iron, 14.5 per cent of iron, and 18 per cent of iron respectively; the first of these products may be dissolved in a small excess of ammonia and treated with calcium chloride whereby an ironcalcium compound is precipitated containing 4.5 per cent of iron and 10 per cent of calcium. All the products are intended for use in therapy.
