283,698. Mitchell, A. R. Nov. 27, 1926. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Letter boxes and like receiving-devices. - In a parcel &c. receiving-device having a receptacle portion provided with an insertion opening closed by a cover and a screening-member arranged to prevent withdrawal of articles in the receptacle, the receptacle is provided with means for breaking the fall of the parcels &c. dropped into it. As shown, the hinged cover 4 is rigidly connected to the screening-member 5 and forms a secondary receptacle or shoot 9 in which the goods are placed and which slide therefrom into the receptacle 2 as the cover is closed and the member 5 moves out of the position shown where it prevents access to the goods in the receptacle from the opening 11; the goods are received in a canvas loop 12 suspended between the walls of the receptacle 2 and the fall of the goods is broken by the buffer 14 secured to or formed on the lower end of a piece of fabric 14<a> secured to the screening-member 5. The goods are removed from the receptacle through a door 3 which may be formed in an extension 18 which may extend through a wall or door of the house; one end of the loop 12 is secured to the door 30 as to form a slope down which the goods slide as the door is opened. In a modification the hinged cover is connected to a pivoted screening- member by a link.
