Abstract
283,508. Naamlooze Vennootschap Norit-Vereeniging Verkoop Centrale. Jan. 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Gases, separating mixtures of.-Gas or vapour is expelled from an adsorbent by treatment with a gaseous displacing medium which is circulated in a closed circuit at a velocity higher than that used during the adsorption process. Fig. 1 shows a suitable apparatus for effecting this. A pair of adsorption chambers 1, 1 are supplied with the gas mixture to be purified through the pipes 3, the purified gas leaving at 5. To recover the adsorbed gas a displacing medium is used consisting either of the gas under treatment admitted by the pipe 8 or of another inert gas admitted by the pipe 40. The gas is forced by the pump 9 through a heater 14 into the adsorption chamber 1 which may be also heated by the steam coil 7. The resulting gas mixture passes into a cooler 27 where the recovered vapour is condensed and thence to a closed vessel 29 from which uncondensed gas is returned to the pump 9 and re-circulated. An automatic valve 39 admits sufficient fresh gas to the pump to compensate for losses. Heat exchange may be effected at 31 between the cold gas leaving the pump. and the hot mixture, leaving the adsorption chamber. When the adsorbent has been regenerated the heater 14 is cut out and the cold gas from the cooler 27 is passed directly via the pipe 45 to the adsorption chamber in order to cool the adsorbent. This action may be supplemented by passing cold water through the coil 7. In a modified arrangement the pump 9 occupies a position in the pipe 20, enabling the condensation of the recovered vapour to be effected under pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) imposes no restriction on the velocity of the displacement gas and includes also the use, of a liquid displacement medium. It further describes facilitating tho separation of the adsorbent and the adsorbed substance by treatment with boiling water, or with a. liquid miscible with the adsorbed substance, or with a substance which wets the adsorbent better than the adsorbed substance. In a modification of this last feature the adsorbent is impregnated with a solution of a lyophile colloid and thoroughly dried. The adsorbing power is unimpaired while the adsorbent is dry, but by wetting the latter the adsorbed vapour is liberated. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
