Abstract

Coking and carbonizing processes.-Coal &c. is dried, distilled, and the coke residue cooled by the transverse passage of gases in a cyclic manner, the heating gases being reheated before each passage through the charge. The heating medium (steam and distillation gas) from a washer 1 is supplied by a pump 2 to the inlet chamber a of the coke cooling zone. After being heated in cooling the coke, the gases pass by conduits f through a heat exchanger c and conduits g to the inlet chamber e of the drying stage which they leave by pipe 5 leading to heaters 4. The heating medium at a temperature of 400-500‹ C. is supplied by a pipe 6 to the inlet chamber i of the distillation zone and after traversing this zone the gases pass through the heat exchanger c to pipes 7 leading to the washer 1 for re-circulation through a pipe 8, excess gases passing through a pipe 9 to a pipe 10 leading from a gas generator 11. The mixed gases are treated in a scrubber 12 and fed to a holder 14, from which gases are supplied by a pipe 15 to the heaters 4 and 20. If further drying of the charge is necessary, hot gases from the heater 20 are fed by a pipe 17 to an upper drying zone and through the material by way of chambers k, m, n, and p to an outlet pipe 18 and fan 19 to the heater 20, any excess gases being withdrawn through a pipe 21. Waste furnace gases may be supplied through pipe 22, and the fan 19 draws the combustion gases from the heaters 4 for use in the heater 20. In a modification the heating medium, in the coke cooling, distillation and drying zone consists solely of producer gas mixed with distillation gases.
