Abstract

283,226. Oakes, F. J. and Brandt, W. F. Jan. 8, 1927, [Convention date]. Friction and belt gearing.-In combined belt and friction gearing, the latter serves also as bearing for the driven shaft 1 which is supported in three pairs of friction wheels 11, 14, 13, 16, and 12, 15 (not shown), each pair being carried on a spindle 24 which carries a pulley 33, the three pulleys being engaged and driven by a belt 34. One spindle is carried on arms 28 turning on a fixed axis 29 to facilitate maintenance of gearing and bearing contact under the pressure of the belt. The spindles 24 are carried in ball bearings 25, 26 or cylindrical or other bearings in the framing 20. Shoulders 43, 44 on the shaft 1 maintain its axial position. The shaft 1 is intended to provide a high-speed drive for grinding and polishing wheels, lapping- tools in tool and die making, &c.
