Abstract

283,198. Budd Manufacturing Co., E. G., (Assignees of Ledwinka, J.). Jan. 8, 1927, [Convention date]. Doors for passenger vehicles.-In an all-metal door for vehicles of the kind having a window opening in its upper portion and comprising inner and outer panels and glass run channels, the inner and outer panels are constituted by one-piece stampings extending completely around the window opening and each provided with a beading or garnish so as to form a finish extending entirely around the window opening on both sides of the door. The outer panel 20 consists of a substantially flat plate which, at the window opening 22, is formed with an inward sweeping curve 23, Figs. 6 and 8, broken by a shallow depression 24 and terminating in a flange 25 around which one portion of the glass rim channel is crimped. The inner panel 26 is a deep drawn stamping forming a vertical hinge rail 28, Fig. 6, of Z-section and a vertical jamb rail 29, 32, 30, Fig. 8, of double Z-section, the stamping being bent around the window opening in a smoothly rounded bend 33 terminating in a flange 34 around which another portion of the glass run channel is crimped. At its peripheral edges 21 the outer panel 20 is crimped over the outer flanges 21 of the inner panel so as to form the door overlap. The glass run frame is built up as a unit, Fig. 4, comprising on one side a channel 39 adapted to be spot welded to the web 28, Fig. 6, and at the. opposite side a channel 40 built up of two stampings 52, 52<1> Fig. 8, welded to each other and to the intermediate part 32 of the jamb rail. These glass run channels 39, 40 are connected at the upper part of the window opening by a pair of cross members 41 welded to the top rail 34<1>, Fig. 5, and crimped at 50 over the curved or beaded portions 23, 33, and at the lower part of the window opening by a pair of cross members 42 crimped at 51 over the edges of the inner and outer panels. Specifications 283,196 and 283,197, [both in Class 108 (i), Road vehicles, Body details &c. of], are referred to.
