Abstract
282,437. Smoot Engineering Corporation, (Assignees of Smoot, C. H.). Dec. 16, 1926, [Convention date]. Fluid-actuated valves for maintaining atmospheric pressure in the fuel bed of a furnace. A conduit 14 permitting a bye-pass flow between a point 19 of higher pressure below the fuel bed 2 and a point 20 of lower pressure above, is connected intermediate its ends by a conduit 13 to a draught regulator 11. The bye-pass 14 is adjusted, preferably by means of reducing valves 17, 18 in its two limbs, so that the pressure transmitted to the conduit 13 is the average of hat within the fuel bed, and the regulator 11 is such as to maintain this at atmospheric pressure. In the regulator described a diaphragm 24, exposed above to the pressure of the conduit 13 and below to atmosphere is connected to a leakage valve 26 the operation of which controls the effect of a motive pressure-fluid admitted at 28 and exhausting at 29 on a piston 27 connected to the flue damper 5, the arrangement being such that the damper 5 opens or closes according as the pressure in the fuel bed rises or falls in relation to the desired normal. The regulator instead of controlling the exhaust damper might equally well control the forced-draught damper 6, or a fan instead of a damper. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also broadly the regulation of pressure in a fluid current with the object of maintaining a desired pressure at a selected point in the flow. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
