Abstract

Compasses and dividers.-In compasses of the school type the pencil-carrying leg 1 is made from a length of wire which is doubled over to form two branches the free upper ends of which are formed or provided with eyes 2 to receive the joint pin 3 while the lower ends are attached to a holder 5 for a pencil &c. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the holder 5 consists of a sleeve with extensions 6 which are passed between the two parts of the leg and closed around them; the pencil is clamped by a screw 7. The lower part 4 of the leg 1 is slightly cranked as shown to prevent longitudinal movement of the holder 5. In the form shown in Figs. 7 and 10 the pencil holder consists of an externally-threaded sleeve 14 with a hole 15 to receive the pencil, and a clamping-nut 16. The sleeve is provided with slots 17 through which the lower end of the leg is forced.
