Yarns and threads, mercerizing. - Cotton and similar fibres and textile materials are mercerized or similarly modified by treatment with an alkylsubstituted sulphonium hydroxide which in part or whole replaces the caustic alkali normally employed. Cotton yarn which has been treated with trimethylsulphonium hydroxide is stronger and more lustrous and elastic.
