281,438. Cunniff, M. Oct. 16, 1926. Blocking and the like; stretching in manufacture.-An apparatus for blocking hats comprises in combination a hollow metal shell 1 with an open bottom, a cloth or felt 2 covering the shell, and means, such as a gas ring or electric heater 4, for heating the interior of the shell. In use, the cloth 2 is damped before the hat 3 is placed over it. On heat being applied the moisture from the cloth or felt permeates through the material of the hat and then dries off. If desired, a removable cover 9 of metal may press the hat against the cloth during the process. In a modification, the shell 1 is in two parts, which may be brought together or separated by a right and left-hand screw 8. The hat may be stretched by this apparatus.
