Abstract

280,199. Deniau, M. Nov. 3, 1926, [Convention date]. Excavating.-In excavating galleries, shafts, &c., or making coffer darns, retaining walls, weirs, &c. in ground which has to be supported by planking or sheathing, the spaces for the insertion of sheathing members may be made by lateral movement of a shield-like member 13, Fig. 1, with upper and lower cutting edges between which tools may be placed, and a tail-member 15 within which telescopic pistons 16 operate to advance the member 13; the pistons 16 are connected at 17 to the members 13, and, after each advance of the latter, are collapsed, as by use of a compressed air ejector, to permit insertion of a sheathing member 19. The pistons 16 may be replaced by mechanical &c. means. In using the device, a heading is first formed, or a space excavated to receive the apparatus, or, after removal of tools, pistons 16, &c., the device may be driven longitudinally into the ground as by compressed air hammers. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that the sheathing may consist of wood or concrete or cement-filled hollow members and may be inserted by driving a pile 1, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), into the ground, as by a compressed air hammer, the pile being then withdrawn and a smaller sheathing member 2 inserted in the hole. The pile 1 may be tapered or longitudinally divided to facilitate removal. In softer ground, a compound member comprising a box 5, Fig. 8 (Cancelled), and an inner pointed member 6, is driven into the ground, the member 6 removed, the sheathing member inserted into the box 5, and the box 5 then removed, the sheathing member remaining in position. During driving, the box 5 and member 6 may be held together by a screw 8, Fig. 12 (Cancelled), controlled by a rod 9 provided with a thread engaging the member 6. The box 5 may have a depending hollow part 10 to receive the rod 9, cables &c. controlling the member 6, or air or water pipes used to facilitate excavating. In place of the compound member, a box 5 with a shoe formed of pivoted jaws 11, Fig. 14 (Cancelled), may be driven into the ground and then partially withdrawn to allow the gates to open; a sheathing member is then inserted in the box 5 and the latter removed. The sheathing members may overlap or iron insertions 22, Fig. 21 (Cancelled), may be provided where tight joints are desired; mortar may be filled into the space between successive spaces of sheathing. Pending the construction of a lining, the sheathing is supported by flat bar iron or I-beams. When the holes are made by apparatus substantially larger than the sheathing members, filling-pieces f<1>, f<2>, Fig. 39 (Cancelled), may be inserted with the latter. Successive spans of sheathing may contact as shown in Fig. 39 (Cancelled). This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
