Actuating-mechanism. - The operation of a valve for discharging powdered material from a tank is controlled automatically by means depending on the accumulation of solid material in the lower part of the tank. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a tank c is surmounted by a chamber a in which is mounted a slowly rotating bevel gear k carrying cams h, i. A floating spindle n, the lower end of which is guided in a slot in the upper end of the shaft 1 which carries blades 3 in the chamber c<1>, carries rollers adapted to ride on the cams h, i. When there is little resistance to the rotation of the blades 3, the cams h, i, rollers v, spindle n, and blades 3 rotate slowly as a whole; but on accumulation of sufficient particles in the chamber c', the consequent resistance causes the rollers v to move up the cams h, i, thereby raising a lever o and opening the weighted valve d through an adjustable link r. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 3, the cams h, i are carried by a worm wheel 11, and the rollers v are carried by a horizontal shaft 14 fixed to a floating spindle 15 in a hole 16 in the shaft 1, vertical guide bars 19 and guide wheels 20 being provided.
