Abstract

279,709. Enders, A., Billen, R., and Soc. Anon. la Carbonisation Industrielle. April 9, 1927. Retorts and methods of working.-Charecal is obtained by carbonizing wood logs, sawdust, olive stones, or the like in portable apparatus comprising two retorts internally heated by the gases from furnaces or gas generators on which they are mounted, and condensers capable of connection to each retort in turn. Each retort C is mounted on a furnace or gas generator F using waste wood in a grate 6 and having a gas heating chamber 3 surrounding the fuel bed 1, and a register 7 leading to the retort. The gases from carbonization in one retort C after passage through condensers I, J, S are introduced through an opening 5, heating passage 3 and orifices in the ash-pit 2 into the previously heated generator of a second retort. c<1>, the carbon dioxide, being reduced to carbon monoxide, and the mixed combustible gases burned in the space 4 before entering the charge. By this means the wood is first dried and then carbonized, after which the retort on furnace F<1> is replaced by a freshly charged one and the condenser connections t, t<1>, t" are altered so that retort c now becomes the second retort. The charge may be divided into annular compartments by perforated cylinders 11 - - 15 to facilitate heating and the evolution of distillates.
