Abstract
278,304. Lundin, B. Sept. 28, 1926, [Convention date]. Carbon dioxide; sodium sulphate. - In generating carbon dioxide by feeding solid sodium or other alkali-metal bicarbonate into an aqueous solution of sodium or other alkalimetal bisulphate, the gasoutlet pipe is fitted with a device such as a pump or compressor to regulate the pressure at which the gas is discharged. A generating chamber 3 to which bisulphate solution is supplied, is surmounted by a chamber 5 for holding the bicarbonate, and contains a rotary shaft 7 carrying agitators 11, 15, and scrapers 14, which serve to force the bicarbonate through openings 13 into the chamber 3. The gas passes out through a water washer and through the pump or compressor to a reservoir. When the pressure falls the pump is operated to produce a reduced pressure in the chamber 3 and withdraw dissolved carbon dioxide. To remove air from the apparatus, a current of steam may be passed through it, or the chamber 3 may be filled with bisulphite solution, which is afterwards expelled to the desired level by admitting carbon dioxide. The chamber 3 may be lined with lead or formed of rustless iron. The strength of the solution used in the chamber 3 is arranged so that a solution of sodium sulphate saturated at about 33‹ C. is obtained after generation of the gas, and the bulk of the sodium sulphate is separated as crystals on cooling. Specification 269,478 is referred to.
