Abstract

277,974. Spilker, A. L. H., Zerbe, C., and Ges. f³r Teerverwertung. Sept. 23, 1926, [Convention date]. Hydronaphthalenes; benzene hydrocarbons.- Organic substances such as coal, tar, pitch. hydrocarbons, &c. are hydrogenated and cracked by treatment with hydrogen in the presence of iodine or of a body capable of yielding iodine or hydriodic acid at the temperature employed (such as ferrous iodide), under high pressure and temperature. Temperatures of 200-500‹ C. and more, and pressures of 50-200 atmospheres arementioned. In an example, crude naphthalene is hydrogenated in an iron pressure vessel with hydrogen which need not be pure in presence of iodine at 300-500‹ C., the products being tetrahydronaphthalene, low-boiling benzene hydrocarbons, and may contain decahydronaphthalene and other hydrocarbons. From 10 kilos of naphthalene, 8 kilos of hydrocarbons boiling up to 200‹ C. are obtained. Impurities such as phenols. bases, and thionaphthene do no harm, and are partly or wholly reduced. In another example, coal-tar pitch is hydrogenated in a similar manner, the products being ammonia, hydrocarbons boiling up 200‹ C., hydrocarbons of higher boiling-point suitable for Diesel engines, and lubricating oils. Specification 253,507, [Class 32, Distilling &c.], is referred to.
