Abstract
277,627. Royal Typewriter Co., Inc., (Assignees of Myers L. C., and Handley; G. F.). Sept. 16, 1926, [Convention date]. Type-lever actions. - Actions for machines having a shift segment supporting the type-levers comprise front and rear intermediate levers connected to the key-levers and typelevers, and are so arranged as to compensate for shift of the segment and to afford accelerated operation of the type-levers with uniform touch of the keys. In the action shown in Fig. 2, type-levers K, pivoted on a vertically shiftable segment 11, have long heels 30 connected by links 29 of uniform length to rear intermediate levers 22 pivoted on a horizontal rod 21 supported by a bracket 18. The intermediate levers 22 are connected by links 28 to front intermediate levers 8 which are pivoted on a horizontal rod 7 and are connected by links 9 to key-levers 1 pivoted on a horizontal rod 2 on the bracket 18. The intermediate levers 22 of the series of actions are of increasing lengths from the centre to sides of the series, the connection points 31 of the links 20 being arranged in an arc that is concentric with the pivot wire 10 of the type-levers, and the connection points 32. The connection points 28<1> of the links 28 are progressively increased in height from the centre to the sides of the series of intermediate levers. The series of intermediate levers 8 consists of the usual long and short levers arranged alternately, the points of connection of the links 9 to the intermediate levers and key-levers being varied to equalize the stroke of the keys in the four banks. When the segment 11 is depressed for case-shift, the links 29 rock downwards about the connection points 31 to compensate for the movement, the normal and shift positions of the connection points 32 being at equal distances above and below the horizontal planes containing the associated connection points 31. A dust-guard 24 for the rod 21 is secured to the bracket 18 and enters curved slots 23 in the levers 22. The rod 2 is provided with a dust-guard 26 to which are secured returning-springs 27 for the key-levers. Letter-spacing mechanism; keys.-The abovedescribed action levers 22 are connected to links 35 having hooks 37 for engaging a member 38 on the universal bar I. Returning-springs 39 are attached to eyes 40 on the links and to a bar 40' which is adjustable to vary the touch of the keys. The bar 40<1> is formed on a pivoted bracket 47, Fig. 4, carrying an adjusting-screw 43 which abuts on the framework and is provided with a knob 46 and a lock-nut 45. The eyes 40 are formed by swaging and punching the links. The connection points 36 of the links 35 are adjacent to the connection points 28' of the links 28, the points 36 being however slightly above and below the points 28<1> at the sides and centre of the series respectively.
