Abstract

275,540. Niethammer, C. Aug. 9, 1926, [Convention date]. Yarns and treads; processes.- Rovings, yarns, &c. composed of staple fibre, &c. are made by a substantially continuous process in which the bunches of filaments produced by a series of spinning nozzles 2 are combined to form a sliver 1 which is subjected to the necessary treatments such as passage through baths 3 - - 6, rollers 7 for frizzling and curling the filaments, a drying device 8, and a dust-removing apparatus 9; the sliver is then spread out and the filaments straightened as by rollers 10, or by needle rods, then cut into fibres of the appropriate length, and finally passed through drawing apparatus 13 so as finally to produce a roving which can be subjected to the usual spinning process. The cutting knife 12 is preferably inclined to the length of the filaments, e.g. in such a manner that the end of the cut at one side is opposite the end of the next cut in the other side. The drawing devices 13, which may consist of a plurality of rollers, combs, &c. are preferably provided with guiding surfaces or funnels in order to assist the drawing process. A number of slivers may be maintained in parallel relationship during the several treatments to which the material is subjected, being afterwards opened out, and the several slivers cut separately, the knives being inclined and preferably staggered in order that a more perfect sliver may be more easily attained in re-combining the several slivers. Alternatively, when a plurality of knives are employed, these may be arranged transversely to the band but operated in sequence. Before cutting, the sliver may be passed through rollers one of which is finely fluted in order to frizz or end the fibres, and these rollers may be provided with a heating device; or the sliver may be creped by passage over a heated cylinder on to which other cylinders press. For convenience, the run of the sliver may be broken at any point, and the product wound up on bobbins, from which it is subsequently unwound and subjected to the succeeding operations. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the passage of the sliver after cutting and before' passage to the drawing rollers, &c. through spinning tubes, &c. by means of which a false twist is given to the bunches of fibres. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
