Abstract

Channelling or slitting apparatus.-A machine for cutting rock or stone comprises a carriage movable on a track and having a spindle projecting laterally and supported by spaced bearings projecting from the adjacent and parallel side of a rigid frame extending from the carriage, the spindle being worm-threaded and being engaged by saw-like cutters and interposed collars each having only a few teeth. As shown, rails are supported on a framing 23 which is adjustable in height and secured by spikes 22 engaging the rock. A carriage 1 is movable along the rails by hand- or power-driven rack and pinion gearing 11, 12 and carries a triangular frame 4. A spindle 5, driven directly or by chain &c. gearing from a motor 8. is supported at its ends by bearings 6, and intermediately by arms 17, Fig. 4. pivoted to lugs 18 on the frame and resiliently held by leaf springs 19 engaging the frame 4; the spindle has a right-hand worm thread and receives internally-grooved saws 13 and toothed collars 13<a> which are locked by a left-hand threaded toothed nut 14, or saws, at the outer end of the spindle. The frame 4 carries, contains, or is formed of superposed pipes 20, 21 perforated adjacent the spindle 5 and supplied with water and air respectively. The saws are preferably diamond saws.
