Abstract

Methylamino compounds ; dimethyl ether. - Ammonia and primary and secondary amines are methylated by passing ammonia or the amine mixed with dimethyl ether in excess at reduced, ordinary or increased pressure over dehydrating catalysts such as the oxide of aluminium, titanium, zirconium or thorium. The dimethyl ether may be mixed with methyl alcohol or a partial methylation with methyl alcohol may first take place. The ether may be produced in situ from methyl alcohol and used for partially methylating ammonia or an amine by passing the latter with alcohol over the catalyst, the excess of ether being allowed to act in a second stage to complete the methylation. In examples, (1) a mixture of ammonia, primary, secondary and tertiary amines is obtained by passing ammonia and dimethyl ether over heated aluminium oxide; if the product is treated again with dimethyl ether, the final product contains no ammonia; (2) a mixture of mono- and dimethylaniline is obtained by using aniline instead of ammonia, and if this mixture, with or wthout more aniline, is treated again, dimethylaniline alone is obtained, which may also be obtained in one step by using a greater excess of ether: (3) dimethyl-#-naphthylamine is obtained by passing #-naphthylamine with dimethylether over heated thorium oxide; (4) dimethylaniline is obtained by passing aniline and methyl alcohol over heated aluminium oxide, separating the base thus obtained and passing it with dimethylether over the catalyst.
