Draw-gear. - A friction draft gear for railway vehicles comprises a friction shell B and friction shoes 8 arranged to be maintained in frictional engagement with the shell, the shoes being caused to rotate relatively to the shell in frictional engagement therewith about the longitudinal axis. The shell B is provided internally with a wedge-shaped member 16 against the sides of which bear the sides of the shoes 8 so that they are rotated by the longitudinal movement of a friction wedge 10. The ends of the shoes 8 bear against a spring seat 9 which is pressed against the shoes by springs 11 contained in a housing A. A spiral groove 20, Fig. 7, is formed in each wedge which is engaged by a loose fitting lug 17, Fig. 6, projecting from the shell B so that during the initial releasing movement the shoes do not rotate. After this initial releasing action has taken place, the frictional adhesion between the parts is broken and the parts restored to their normal position by a spring 13. The lugs 17 also serve to rotate the shoes in reverse direction, causing them to assume their initial position. The clearance between one of the shoes and its guiding spiral may be made greater than that between the other shoe and its spiral, thus causing one shoe to start rotation ahead of the other both during compression and release, and while the other is still moving in a straight line
