Abstract

273,014. Constantinesco, G. March 26, 1926. Variable-speed and reversing gearing; balance gearing.-Variable-speed gearing rendered automotic by the action of an oscillating mass and comprising a ratchet, as described in Specification 185,022, is adapted to drive two or more shafts with balance effect, as in driving separately two or all the wheels of a vehicle. An engine crank 2, Figs. 2 and 3, is connected to a lever 5 which carries a mass 4 and is pivoted at its work end 6 to a lever 7. The lever 7 oscillates loosely on a shaft 8 supported in a fixed bearing 12 and drives that shaft through a unidirectional device 14. According to the invention, the lever 7 is connected by a driving link 11 to a second oscillator 10 loose upon a shaft 9 in a fixed bearing 13 and driving that shaft through a one-way device 15. The shafts 8, 9 are driven differentially at speeds which vary automatically with the load. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a stabilizing spring link 18 also conects the oscillators 7, 10. A reversing-gear is shown in Fig. 4 for connecting the shafts 8, 9 respectively to two road wheels such as 37. Each of the shafts 8, 9 is adapted to drive its corresponding part axle such as 27 through gears 25, 26 driven in opposite directions and adapted to be connected to such axle by a doubleended clutch 28. The clutches 28 of the two gear devices are operated in unison through levers 31, 31<1> and links 30 from a single rod 29.
