Synchronizing dynamo - electric machines. - Synchronous dynamo - electric machines are synchronized after being run up to approximate speeds by currents fed into them from a transformer or transformers of high impedance connected between the supply mains and the machine windings. Fig. 4 shows a rotary converter 1 which is started by a motor 2 on closing a switch 6 which simultaneously energizes the high impedance transformers 8, 9, 10. Near synchronous speed the switch 14 is closed on to intermediate contacts to connect the secondaries of these transformers across sections of the converter armature, and after this has pulled into synchronism the switch 14 is fully closed and the switch 6 opened. Arrangements for starting a motor-generator 1, 2 from the d.c. side are shown in Fig. 5, and for synchronizing by a transformer 9, 10 connected in at suitable speed by a switch 8. In suitable cases the synchronizing transformer may be in circuit throughout the starting operation.
