Abstract
270,727. Bonnard, G. May 10, 1926, [Convention date]. Degumming silk.-In the production of chappe yarn from silk crape waste, the material is broken up into shorter threads in a waste opener, the threads are then separated into parallel lines in a carding machine or in a set of carders in which the filaments are broken further. The sliver is then cut up if necessary into lengths to ensure the freeing of ends of filaments, and to obtain a length of filament of 4 centimetres or upwards. The mass is then treated in boiling water (to which a little soap may be added) for about 30-40 minutes, the filaments being kept in motion to facilitate untwisting thereof and to avoid the formation of compact masses. The material is then rinsed and dried, and consists of a somewhat short staple chappe which may be carded, combed, drawn and spun with or without admixture with other fibres such as wool to form a mixed yarn. Wool crape waste may be similarly treated.
