Charging. - In the furnace according to the parent Specification the head of the ram P is channel-shaped in order that, when a layer of spaced billets 4 is supported on the flanges of the head and the latter raised into the furnace till its horizontal web is level with the tops of the fixed supports s, s', as shown in Fig. III, a further layer of billets 5, Fig. 4, can be charged sideways into the channel, one raising of the ram thus serving to charge two layers of billets.
