Actuated by weights; force-transmitting mechanism; electric.- Operating mechanism for brakes and for other purposes comprises a pivoted lever 16, a connection 14 to the brake 11 or other device, and a biassing means such as a weight, 23, one of the connection points or the pivot being movable in relation to the other points by electrically operated mechanism mounted on the lever. The lever is pivoted at 17 and the weight 23 is adjusted by means of a screw 21 operated from the electromotor 18. An adjustable weight 28 may be set to balance the lever when the bearing weight 23 is in a predetermined position. The electromotor 18 may be automatically de-energized when the weight 23 reaches the limiting points 30. When the machine controlled by the brake 11 is electrically driven, the brake may be applied on failure of the electric supply. The brake may also be applied on failure of the current supply to the electromotor 18. The end of a lever 35 connected to lever 16 works in a slotted link connected to a weight 34 and to a retaining lever 33 which holds up the weight 34 by engaging the end of a bell-crank lever 32 held in positionby the solenoid 31 energized from the main electric supply and holding up a small weight. When the electric supply fails, the lever 33 is tripped and the brake 11 is applied by the weight 34 which also actuated a tripping device 36 to open the main supply circuit. An arrangement of circuits is also shown by means of which the position of the weight along the lever is made to correspond with the position of a controller handle.
