Abstract

267,884. Jackson, M. B. March 17. 1926, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In an electric or other starter, a starter pinion 4 is moved axially on its shaft 2 into engagement with an engine gear 5 by a pivoted finger 9 engaging the pinion to one side of its axis, rotary movement of the pinion being effected by the finger if the teeth of the pinion clash with those of the gear 5. The finger is moved out of its operative position by the pinion if the latter is rotated in either direction of the gear, and the finger when in an inoperative position has no appreciable tendency to move the pinion axially. As shown, the finger is pivoted at 9b on the arm 6a of a bell-crank lever 6 actuated by a pedal 8, the finger having a lug 9a on each side of the arm 6<a>. The outward move. ment of the finger is limited by a resilient stop consisting of a U-shaped wire spring 21 crossing the gap between the lugs 9<a>, the limbs being coiled around the pivot 9b and secured at their ends to the sides of the finger. The pinion 4 is mounted on threads 3 on the shaft 2 of the motor 1 and has a flange or collar 4a, preferably serrated, for engagement by the teeth 9<d>, 9e of the finger. A spring 19 and a fixed. stop 23 normally hold the lever 6 and finger 9 in the position shown in Fig. 1. On depressing the pedal 8, the finger 9 moves the pinion into mesh with the gear 5. When the engine starts, the pinion 4 is automatically disengaged by the threads 3 and the finger 9 is thrown into the position shown in Fig. 4, in which it has no tendency to move the pinion axially. If the gear 5 turns backwards, the finger 9 is thrown outwards, against the tension of the spring 21, into a position in which it engages the periphery of the collar 4a. The arm 6b of the lever 6 is arranged to close a switch 11 for the starting motor. In a modification, the finger swings inwardly on its pivot to its operative position and is provided at the end remote from its teeth with a weight sufficient to rock the finger to the operative position determined by the resilient stop. Specifications 261,032 and 264,459 are referred to.
