Band.-A bra.ke, especially for vehicles, comprises a single flexible band, such as a roller chain with an attached friction lining, applied externally or internally to a drum by moving its ends towards or away from one another, one end of the band being arranged to abut on a stop. As shown in Fig. 1, the chain 5 and lining 3 are applied externally to a drum 1 by drawing together blocks 9, 10, secured to the ends of the chain, by means of a flexible cable 11' secured to the block 9 and passing through the block 10 and a sheath 11, which bears against the block 10 and is secured at 12 to a link of the chain 5. A spring 16 tends to force the blocks apart. Stops 13 are provided against one of which the block 9 or 10 abuts according to the direction of rotation of the drum. In a modification, the sheath 11 is secured to the block 10 and the stops are formed by the ends of a flange on the casing. When the chain 5, Fig. 4, and lining 3 are applied internally to a drum 1, the ends of the chain are connected to links 18, 19 pivoted together at a point 20 connected by a link 21 to a bell-crank lever 22 which is operated by a cable 23 to apply the brake against the action of a spring 16. An abutment 13 is provided for the ends of the chain.
