Abstract
266,381. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Feb. 20, 1926, [Convention date]. Powdered fuel engines. - The fuel is fed through a valve to a small supply chamber which communicates through a valve with the combustion chamber, the valves being operated so that one is open when the other is closed. The fuel may be fed to the supply chamber by any means, e.g. by gravity, or by a piston or worm conveyer, which may be coupled to the inlet valve. As shown, the fuel falls from a storage vessel through a pipe 1 into a chamber 2 and, on the opening of the valve 3, is pushed by a piston 4 into the supply chamber 5, Figs. 1 and) 2, Fig. 2 being a section on the line A-B, Fig. 1, The valve 3 is provided with a slot 7 opening into a nozzle 8 through which the fuel is blown into the combustion chamber by compressed air when the valve 3 closes, the slot 7 being closed by the side of the chamber 5 when the valve 3 is open. The compressed air is supplied to the chamber 5 through a needle valve 6. For starting, liquid fuel from a nozzle 11 may be injected into the supply chamber 5 by the compressed air. The mouth of the nozzle 8 may be provided with spiral mixing grooves, or a mixing-device provided with tangential inlets 10 may be mounted over the end of the nozzle, in which case hot air from the combustion chamber is drawn in through the inlets 10 and whirls the fuel. A baffle may be provided at the end of the mixing device 9. The nozzle 8 may be replaced by channels on the periphery of the valve or in the wall surrounding the valve, the slot 7 being replaced by an annular groove around the valve, or the nozzle may be fixed to the wall of the combustion chamber.
