Monazo dyes, dyeing wool without a mordant,. are obtained by coupling a diazotized aminobenzyl sulphuric acid or a substitution product therof with an aromatic amine not containing a sulphonic or carboxylic group, or by coupling a diazotized nitroaminobenzyl-sulphonic acid or a substitution product thereof with a sulphonic or carboxylic acid of #-naphthylamine or a substitution product thereof, or with a 2-aminonaphthol, or a sulphonic acid or substitution product thereof; the products dye wool in an acid bath in various shades fast to light, and the first-mentioned dyestuffs may be used for dyeing or printing cellulose acetates or ethers or their conversion products. The preparation of dyestuffs from the following pairs of components is described in examples :-4-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and diphenylamine, ammonium 5-nitro-2-aminobenzyl sulphonate and ethylbenzylaniline, and 3:5-dinitro-2-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and ethyl-#- naphthylamine. The shades obtained on acetate silk or wool with dyestuffs from the following pairs of components are tabulated : 2-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and methylbenzylaniline; 4-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and methyl-#-naph. tLylamine; 5-nitro-2-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and methyldiphenylamine or oxyethyl-#-naphthylamine; 3 : 5-dinitro-2-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and ethylbenzylaniline; and 3 : 5-dinitro-4-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and #-naphthylamine or ethyl-#-naphthylamine. In further examples, the preparation of wool dyes from the following pairs of components is described : ammonium 5-nitro-2- aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and 2-methylaminonaphthalene-7-sulphonic acid; 3 : 5-dinitro-2- aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and 2-methylamino- 8-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid, #-naphthylamine-3- carboxylic acid, or 2-amino-8-naphthol; and ammonium 3 : 5-dinitro-4-aminobenzyl sulphonate and 2-ethylaminonaphthalene-7-sulphonic acid. The shades obtained with dyestuffs from the following pairs of components are also tabulated :- 5-nitro-2-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and 2- amino- (or methylamino)-8-naphthol 6-sulphonic acid; 3:5-dinitro-2-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and 2-methylaminonaphthalene-7-sulphonic acid, #-naphthylamine-6-sulphonic acid, phenyl-#- naphthylamine-6-sulphonic acid, or 2-amino (or phenylamino)-8-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid; and 3 : 5-dinitro-4-aminobenzyl sulphonic acid and 2- methylaminonaphthalene-6-sulphonic acid. 3 : 5-Dinitro-2 (or 4)-aminobenzyl sulphonicacid is obtained from 3 :5-dinitro-2 (or 4)-chlor benzyl sulphonic acid by the replacement of the chlorine by the amino group in the usual manner.
