Abstract
264,906. Creed & Co., Ltd., Creed, F. G., and Salmon, R. D. Oct. 22, 1925. Type-printing telegraphs.-Relates to a continuously-running transmitter controlled by a strip perforated according to a multiple unit code and of the kind in which the position of a single switch member, movable between contacts, is controlled successively by the signal units by the motor operation of cams acting in cyclic order upon members of which the movements 'are transmitted or not to the switch member according to the position of corresponding peckers cooperating with the strip perforations. The cams act directly on levers which move the switch member and to which the peckers are pivoted. The drawings illustrate a transmitter operated by a strip perforated according to a five-unit code with start and stop signals such as would be produced by the apparatus described in Specification 264,907. The switch member comprises a spring blade 4, Fig. 1, moving between contacts 2 and 3, and carried by a rocking member 6 controlled by a spring 7. The free end of the member 6 extends across the ends of six levers 8 each controlled by a spring 9 to hold a roller 8 carried by the lever against a corresponding cam a - - f, Fig. 7, on a shaft 18 driven through gears 15, 19 from the main driving spindle. The five peckers 10 are each pivoted to one of the levers 8, the sixth lever, associated with the cam f, carrying no pecker and serving to send to line an impulse for starting the start-stop shaft at the receiving station. The free ends of the peckers are held by light springs 28 against guiding grooves on the spindle 27 of the tape feed wheel which is driven through gearing from the shaft 18. The cams a - - comprise six precisely similar discs, Fig. 9, each provided with an edge flat 11 and three circularly-arranged holes 11. The discs are assembled with spacing washers 13, Fig. 7, in six different angular positions on a sleeve 12, mounted on the shaft 18, and are connected by a pin 14 passing through a hole 11 in each disc, three positions being obtained by using three different holes in discs arranged with one face foremost, and the other three positions by using three different holes in the remaining discs which are reversely arranged. The pin 14 is fixed in the gear wheel 15 rigid with the sleeve 12 and in a washer 16 secured to the sleeve as by a pin 17. The cam unit is secured to the shaft 18 by the engagement of an extension 17 of the pin 17' in an open-ended slot 22 in the shaft and by a screw 23 engaging a threaded hole 22, in the shaft. The pecker mechanism and the mounting of the electrical connections may be as described in Specification 191,772.
