Abstract

The invention provides a composition comprising nanoparticles of ceria-zirconia (CeZrOx) suspended in a liquid. The nanoparticles have a particle size smaller than 10 nm and comprise a solid solution Ce, Zr and O in a solid solution crystal lattice in which the mixing of Ce and Zr is incomplete such that not all of the Zr in the nanoparticles is present in the solid solution crystal lattice. The composition additionally comprises stabiliser ions which are anions of a strong mineral acid or strong organic acid. The composition is useful as a scavenger in electrochemical systems and in producing components of such systems such as ion-conducting membranes and catalyst layers.
