Abstract
262,180. Carwardine, G. Sept. 3, 1925. Springs, arrangement of.- Relates to auxiliary spring systems for use with. ordinary spring suspensions in which relative movement between the sprung and unsprung parts of the vehicle causes the resilient member or members of the auxiliary systems to assist or oppose the suspension springs according as the movement of the auxiliary system takes place on one side or the other of a dead-centre position. The resilient member or members of the auxiliary system in its dead-centre position act in alignment with an arm of a bell-crank lever. As shown, links 8 are pivoted at their upper ends to a bracket 10 on the frame 1 and at their lower ends to a bell-crank lever having a horizontal arm 12 pivoted to the axle-casing 4. The arm 13 of the bell-crank is vertical and is pivoted to a member 14 having an abutment 15 for the lower end of a compression spring 16 the upper end of which bears against an abutment 17 on a member 18 carried by the upper pivot of the links 8. In a modification, the compression spring is replaced by a tension spring which is connected at its lower end to a downwardly projecting arm of the bell-crank. A leaf spring or an india-rubber or pneumatic buffer may be used for the auxiliary spring. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement comprising a pair of vertical links pivoted at their upper ends to the frame and connected at their lower ends by a pair of jointed horizontal links forming a toggle, the joint of which is connected to the axle. The lower ends of the vertical links are pressed towards each other by one or more springs.
